Crawl-and-Climb Obstacle Course
Toddlers walk, crawl, and climb through a simple course of cushions and boxes, building leg strength and balance.
Ages 12–24 months
Supports this milestone
- demonstrates effective and efficient use of large muscles for movement and position. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- Couch cushions or firm pillows
- A sturdy low box or step the child can climb onto
- A blanket draped over two chairs to make a tunnel
- A favorite toy to retrieve at the end
Steps
- Walk the course yourself first so the toddler sees each part.
- Invite the child to walk across the cushions, holding a hand if needed.
- Encourage the child to climb onto and off the low box with care.
- Cheer the child as they crawl through the blanket tunnel to reach the toy.
- Reset the course and let the child go again as many times as they like.
Variations
- Turn it into a forest course outdoors using logs, low slopes, and stumps.
- Add a "stepping stone" path of flat cushions to step from one to the next.
Differentiation
- For new walkers, lower the climbing height and offer a steadying hand throughout.
- For confident movers, add a balance beam made from a taped line or a plank flat on the floor.
Safety
- Keep climbing heights low, use a soft non-slip surface, and stay within arm's reach during climbing.
- Anchor or weight any box so it cannot tip.
