Activity
Move-and-Explore Movement Stations
Toddlers use a range of whole-body movements, crawling, climbing, carrying, throwing, and dancing, at simple stations that invite active exploration.
Ages 12–36 months
Supports this milestone
- demonstrates effective and efficient use of large muscles to explore the environment. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- A low, sturdy climbing cushion, step, or couch cushion stack
- A laundry basket and a few soft balls or beanbags
- Lightweight items to carry, such as empty boxes or soft toys
- A music player or a simple song to dance to
Steps
- Show the children each station with a quick demonstration.
- Let children climb onto and down from the cushion with you spotting nearby.
- At the basket, invite them to toss soft balls in and dump them out again.
- On the carry path, ask them to move a box or toy from one end to the other.
- Finish in the dance area, encouraging them to move their bodies in new ways to music.
Variations
- Take the stations outdoors and add running and kicking on grass.
- Add a tunnel to crawl through between stations.
Differentiation
- For new walkers, lower the climbing height and shorten the carry path.
- For active toddlers, add a jump-off-a-low-step or kick-the-ball challenge.
Accessibility
- Offer ramps, low platforms, and supports so children of all mobility levels can take part.
- Provide reachable cause-and-effect toys for children who move from seated or supported positions.
Safety
- Keep climbing surfaces low, pad landing areas, anchor furniture, and spot children closely.
- Use only soft throwing objects and space children to avoid collisions.
