- A paper plate for each child
Steps
- Hold up a few cards and ask what each food is and whether anyone has tried it.
- Invite children to sort cards into "everyday foods" and "sometimes foods."
- Talk about how everyday foods like fruits and vegetables help us grow and play.
- Ask each child to build a colorful plate using a variety of everyday foods.
- Let children share what is on their plate and why they chose it.
Variations
- Use real, washed foods or grocery flyers instead of cards.
- Add a "what does your body say" step about feeling hungry or full.
Differentiation
- For children who need support, sort alongside a partner and use fewer cards.
- For a challenge, ask children to name a food from each color of the rainbow.
Accessibility
- Use clear picture cards and real foods so children can choose without relying on text.
- Respect cultural foods and family practices in the discussion.
Safety
- Keep the conversation positive and pressure-free and follow each child's allergy and dietary plan if real food is used.
