Materials
- One or two hand puppets or stuffed animals
- A single shared toy for the puppets to "want"
Steps
- Introduce the puppet and let it "want" the toy another puppet is holding.
- Pause and ask the children, "What can puppet do instead of grabbing?"
- Help the puppet practice words, such as "Can I have a turn?" or "My turn next."
- Show the puppet using gentle hands and waiting for a turn.
- Invite children to take the puppet and try the friendly words themselves.
Variations
- Act out other moments, such as wanting a turn on a swing or in line.
- Let an older child be the puppet that models the calm response.
Differentiation
- For toddlers, focus on one word and one gentle action, such as a soft pat.
- For older preschoolers, talk about how the other puppet felt.
Accessibility
- Pair each phrase with a simple gesture or sign so all children can join.
- Keep the group small and the turns short for children who wait with difficulty.
Safety
- Keep the pretend conflict light and friendly; never let it become a real tussle.
