Skill
Explores Objects and Their Movement in Space
Child explores how objects fit together, fit inside others, and move through space.
Ages 6–36 months
Why it matters
Spatial awareness is early mathematical thinking. Discovering how objects fit, nest, and travel through space builds the intuitions about position, size, and shape that ground later geometry and measurement.
Builds toward this milestone
- uses spatial awareness to understand objects and their movement in space. — Head Start ELOF
What mastery looks like
- Explores how things fit together and move through space.
- Predicts how objects fit into or inside other things, matching object size to container size.
- Completes simple puzzles or fits shapes into matching openings.
How to observe it
- Does the child try to fit a smaller object inside a larger one?
- Does the child anticipate where a rolling or dropped object will go?
Accessibility
- Use large, lightweight shapes and wide openings for children with motor differences.
- Add textured or contrasting edges to shapes for children with vision differences.
