What mastery looks like

  • Points to print (not pictures) when asked where to read on a page.
  • Recognizes a few familiar logos, signs, or their own written name.

How to observe it

  • When sharing a book, does the child point to words or "pretend read" the text?
  • Does the child notice and comment on signs and labels in daily settings?

Accessibility

  • Use large-print or high-contrast materials, or tactile/braille labels, for children with low vision.
