Child attends to, repeats, and uses rhymes, phrases, or refrains from songs and stories.

Ages 0–36 months

Why it matters

Rhymes, songs, and repeated refrains tune a child's ear to the sounds and rhythms of language. Joining in builds phonological awareness, memory for language, and the joyful, shared experience that motivates early literacy.
