Shows Curiosity and Asks Questions

Child notices novel or puzzling things and seeks more information by exploring, commenting, and asking questions.

Ages 24–54 months

Why it matters

Curiosity expressed through questioning marks a shift from acting on the world to actively inquiring about it. Asking "what," "why," and "how" drives vocabulary, reasoning, and the disposition to investigate rather than passively receive information.

What mastery looks like

  • Asks questions about how or why something works.
  • Investigates a new object or event without being directed to.
  • Makes a guess or prediction, such as "Maybe it floats," before testing it.

How to observe it

  • When something surprising happens, does the child ask about it or try to find out more?
  • Does the child offer their own theories, even when they are not yet accurate?

Accessibility

  • Accept questions offered through signs, gestures, or pointing, not spoken words alone.
  • Give children who process language slowly extra wait time after a wondering before stepping in with an answer.
