Ages 14–36 months
Supports this milestone
- imitates and engages in play with other children. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- Open floor space
- Optional simple props such as scarves or shakers
Steps
- Start a simple repeatable action, such as clapping or stomping.
- Invite the children to copy you, naming what you are doing.
- Let one child become the leader and encourage the others to imitate them.
- Cheer each child's turn and the group's copying.
- Keep actions big, slow, and easy to follow.
Variations
- Add scarves to wave or shakers to shake for imitation.
- Pair the game with a familiar song so the actions repeat naturally.
Differentiation
- For younger toddlers, keep to one action at a time.
- For older toddlers, chain two actions together to copy in sequence.
Accessibility
- Offer seated versions of actions (clap, wave) for children who are not yet mobile.
- Pair each action with a clear verbal label for children who learn through hearing.
Safety
- Keep the space clear of obstacles and supervise active movement.
