Activity
More, Less, or Same Snack Plates
Children count two plates of snacks and decide which has more, fewer, or the same.
Ages 36–60 months
Supports this milestone
- compares numbers. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- Two small plates or paper circles per pair
- A bowl of identical countable snacks or counters, such as crackers or cubes
- A few larger counters and a few smaller counters for the challenge round
Steps
- Put a small handful of counters on each plate, using different amounts.
- Invite the children to count the first plate together, touching each item.
- Count the second plate the same way and write or say each total.
- Ask: which plate has more, which has fewer, or are they the same?
- Move one counter and recount to show how the comparison changes.
- Line the children up and name who is first, second, and third.
Variations
- Make the smaller group out of large counters and the larger group out of tiny ones to show that count, not size, decides.
- Hide one plate and ask the child to make the other plate have "one more."
Differentiation
- For younger children, compare groups of one versus three so the difference is obvious.
- For older children, compare amounts up to ten and ask "how many more?"
Accessibility
- Arrange counters in straight rows for children who compare by sight rather than touch.
- Use high-contrast counters and plates for children with low vision.
Safety
- If using edible snacks, confirm allergies and serve only clean, washed hands and surfaces.
