Materials

  • Open space for big arm movements
  • A shallow tray of sand, salt, or shaving cream
  • Model letter cards

Steps

  • Show a model letter and trace it in the air with a big arm motion.
  • Have the child sky-write the same letter, naming the strokes ("top to bottom").
  • Move to the sensory tray and trace the letter with a finger.
  • Finish by tracing the letter on a worksheet.

Variations

  • Trace letters on a peer's back and guess the letter.

Differentiation

  • Start with straight-line letters (L, T, I) before curves.
  • Offer a pencil grip and thicker guide lines on paper.

Accessibility

  • Sensory trays give tactile feedback for children developing fine-motor control.
