Activity
Scarf and Ribbon Dance
Children move expressively to music with flowing scarves, matching their motion to the mood of the song.
Ages 12–42 months
Materials
- Light scarves or short ribbon wands, one or two per child
- Music with a clear change between lively and calm songs
- A clear, soft open space
Steps
- Play a gentle song and sway your scarf slowly, inviting children to float theirs like clouds.
- Switch to a lively song and shake or twirl the scarf quickly, letting children speed up too.
- Play a stop-and-go game, freezing when the music pauses and moving when it returns.
- Invite children to lead with their own moves, such as spinning, jumping, or making waves.
- End with a slow song and a calm, settling sway.
Variations
- Trade scarves for streamers, bells, or simply hands and bodies.
- Name movements together, such as "high," "low," "fast," and "slow."
Differentiation
- For younger children, focus on free movement; for older children, invite them to match tempo and lead the group.
Accessibility
- Welcome seated, hand, or wheelchair movement and add visual cues for children who do not hear the music.
Safety
- Keep scarves short, space children apart, and clear the floor to prevent trips and collisions.
