Remember the Routine Cards
A toddler uses simple photo cards of a daily routine to recall and tell what comes next, drawing on memory to guide the steps.
Ages 18–36 months
Supports this milestone
- uses memories as a foundation for more complex actions and thoughts. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- 3 to 5 photos of steps in a familiar routine (wash hands, sit down, eat, clear plate)
- Optional ring or board to hold the cards in order
Steps
- Look at the first card together and name what is happening.
- Ask, "What do we do next?" and let the child recall before turning the card.
- Move through the cards, letting the child lead as much as possible.
- During the real routine later, glance at the cards to confirm the child's memory.
- Celebrate when the child anticipates a step on their own.
Variations
- Mix up two cards and ask the child to put them back in the right order.
- Use the cards to talk about a routine from earlier in the day.
Differentiation
- For younger toddlers, use just two cards for a two-step routine.
- For older toddlers, leave a card out and ask what is missing.
Accessibility
- Pair each photo with a spoken word or sign for children who are not yet matching pictures.
Safety
- Use sturdy, laminated or thick cards with no sharp edges.
