Reach the Toy Puzzle
A toddler works out how to get a desirable toy that is just out of reach, trying several strategies until one works.
Ages 9–36 months
Supports this milestone
- learns to use a variety of strategies in solving problems. — Head Start ELOF
Materials
- A favorite toy
- A light scarf or towel
- A small, safe container with a loose lid
Steps
- Show the child the toy and let them want it, without handing it over.
- Wait and watch as the child tries to reach it, offering quiet encouragement.
- Resist solving it too fast; let the child experiment with pulling the scarf or opening the lid.
- If the child stays stuck, model one small hint, then return the problem to them.
- Cheer the strategy, not just the result, such as "You pulled the scarf to bring it close."
Variations
- Put the toy inside a container with a lid the child must remove.
- Set the toy under a low table so the child must crawl or reach around.
Differentiation
- For younger children, leave the scarf almost in their hand.
- For older toddlers, add a second step, such as opening a lid then pulling a string.
Accessibility
- Use a toy that makes noise or has high contrast to keep the goal motivating.
Safety
- Keep scarves short and supervise closely; never leave a child alone with loose fabric.
