Materials

  • Bins, baskets, or shelves with picture-and-word labels
  • A variety of toys and materials that belong in those spots

Steps

  • Walk around together and read the picture labels on each bin or shelf.
  • Show how to carry an item carefully and place it in its "home."
  • Turn cleanup into a game, such as "find everything that lives on the block shelf."
  • Cheer as each item finds its home and the space becomes tidy.
  • Notice and name careful handling, such as stacking blocks gently.

Variations

  • Play "I spy something that belongs in the art bin" to guide sorting.
  • Time a friendly cleanup song and finish before it ends.

Differentiation

  • For younger or new children, focus on one category at a time.
  • For older children, let them help design and place new labels.

Accessibility

  • Use bold photo labels for pre-readers and high-contrast labels for low vision.
  • Offer easy-grip bins or open trays for children with motor differences.

Safety

  • Keep bins light and at child height to avoid dropping or tipping.
